Golf MK4 Struggling to start. I have a Volkswagen golf mk4 16v I have been having problems for a while with it starting up. a few month ago the emissions workshop light would come on I then took it to the garage and was told it was the EGR valve and I paid for a new EGR valve to be fitted a few days later the problem occurred again and I took Hi guys, sorry to jump on board this thread but my 1998 VW golf 1.6 SE also failed it’s MOT today on emissions . My golf is high mileage at 182,658 but she runs very well and is up and down the M3 as part of my daily 56 mile commute. It failed across all the emission tests and results were: Fast Idle 1 CO % Vol 4.242 HC ppm vol 883 Lambda 0.871 Here's a good way to see if your clutch isn't fully releasing: Put the car on level ground. Turn the engine off. Push in & hold clutch pedal, put car in 1st gear, start engine. Continue holding clutch pedal. If the car creeps forward, your clutch isn't releasing completely. Really common problem. Your "bonnet open switch" is not working. It's near the bonnet catch. Usually gets covered in dirt. This is how the system works: 1. The oil sensor is very short and sits under all the oil when the engine is off. It is only designed to measure the oil level when the engine is running. 2. Worn Engine. Worn engine is another culprit responsible for the blue smoke from exhaust issue. Each engine has pistons which move up and down a cylinder. Each piston has metal rings round its side like bracelets. The function of these rings is to help the piston to form a tight seal against the cylinder. The main complaints were of noisy brakes, imperfect paintwork and uneven tyre wear. Keep an eye open for these problems during the test drive. Honda Civic power steering problem ('06) Some early Golf Mk4 - noel2538. I have a Golf Mk4 1.6 SE which has hesitation problem which I have posted on here recently. I have now changed the air filter. When I changed the Air filter I had a look around the engine area and check the new throttle body VW had fitted. I notice that the small pipe that comes from the throttle body pipe was completely Superb diesels. Classy cabin. Strong residuals. Costly to buy. Handling is stodgy. The Golf errs more towards comfort and refinement, and rides reasonably well. It's a relaxed motorway cruiser 3f2G.
